I have seen A LOT of tile showers in my career. I have also helped design a lot of showers. Having said that I can definitely say that a simple design is by far the way to go! I had my own personal experience before I became a Decorator, so I'm speaking from experience. My shower pan had leaked so we had to tear out the floor and the first row of tile on the shower wall. I thought why not use a slate look porcelain that compliments the existing solid color tile to give it some interest? BIG MISTAKE.....it looked horrible.....looked like it didn't belong at all! Mainly because my shower was already two toned and so it became too busy. What did I do? I had the tile installer tear it out and start over. Luckily, the original tile was still available so I went back with what was on the walls except in a 6x6 and the darker of the 2 colors on the wall. It is much better....I'm very happy with it! What I have found in my 12 years of doing this is that a simple design is timeless and priceless. You won't regret simplicity, but you will most likely regret over doing it. Do I mean boring? Absolutely not! There are classic subway tile looks that are beautiful but there are also some great new looks that make a beautiful shower as well. Let me show you some prime examples!
