Great Tips on How to Clean Granite Countertops from One on One Flooring and Design

If you have granite countertops in your home, you may be wondering how to clean the surface without harming that surface. It is absolutely true that some cleaning products will cause damage to your countertops if used. At One on One Flooring and Design in Hazel Green, AL, we want you to know the facts about cleaning your countertops. Here is a list of safe ways to keep your surfaces clean:

The first step is to make your work easier. You can do this by removing all of the appliances that may be on your countertop such as microwave, toaster, coffee pot, etc. Then, using a damp cloth, wipe up any debris that may be on the surface (loose coffee grounds, bits of toast, etc).

Once you have the surface wiped clean, mix up some cleaning fluid. Note: You must NOT use anything that contains acid, such as vinegar, bleach or anything that contains lemon oil. To make a safe cleaning fluid, fill a dishpan or bucket with warm water (do not use extremely hot water). Add 3 parts dish soap with 1 part rubbing alcohol (standard, not perfumed). Do NOT use too much alcohol, as this may cause problems with the countertop sealer.

Use a clean cloth saturated (and wrung out) to clean your granite countertops. Make sure you dry and buff the surface to remove any streaks.

You can also buy over-the-counter cleaning products for your countertops, but do read the labels to make sure they are safe, and that they are specifically made for cleaning granite.
